Contribution EU ETS

Instrument to tackle climate change and reduce greenhouse gas emissions

Rules of validity:

The Emission Trading System (ETS) is a key EU instrument to tackle climate change and reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

As the new European sustainability policies come into force from January 2024, affecting the shipping industry, we are committed to maintaining transparency and keeping passengers informed of the latest updates.

The EU ETS has been introduced by the competent authorities to further regulate emissions of carbon or other greenhouse gases. This measure can serve various purposes, such as incentivizing emission reductions, financing environmental initiatives and stimulating technological innovation.

A new item called ‘EU ETS contribution’ will be included in the ticket price. This amount, which will vary according to the route, will be applied per passenger and per vehicle. At the moment, the routes operated under an agreement, Civitavecchia-Olbia-Civitavecchia and Genoa-Porto Torres-Genoa, in the period from 01/01 to 31/05 and from 01/10 to 31/12 are exempt from the application of the EU ETS.
